Carpet Tips

1) Candle Wax - If you have candle wax in your carpet scrape off as much as possible with a spatula or spoon. If wax is deeply embedded, cover with a white cloth and apply iron on low setting. Wax will transfer to cloth. Any remaining residue may be removed by using Rug Doctor Spot Remover.

2) Chewing Gum - If you have chewing gum in your carpet scrape away as much as possible first. Rubbing the stain with ice will harden the gum and make the removal easier. Next, sponge with a small amount of dry cleaning solvent. Blot. (use small amounts of solvent to prevent any damage to sizing, backings, or stuffing materials. DO NOT use gasoline, lighter fluid if carbon tetrachloride. Then, mix one teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalis or bleaches) with a warm cup of lukewarm water. Blot.

3) Soy Sauce - To remove soy sauce from your carpets mix one teaspoon of mild pH balanced detergent (a mild non-alkaline non-bleaching detergent) with a cup of lukewarm water. Blot. Next, mix one teaspoon of household ammonia with a half of cup of water. Blot.Then, mix another teaspoon of a mild pH balanced detergent (mild non-alkaline non-bleaching detergent) with a cup of warm water. Blot. Finally, sponge with clean water and blot.

4) Dry Stain, Wet Stain - What do you do? -If you are attempting to clean up a dry stain on your carpet first vacuum the loose soil up before applying cleaning solution. If you have a wet stain, blot it don't rub it in. Rubbing will only cause the stain to spread and go deeper into your carpet. It is also handy to have a carpet cleaning solution handy for times like these. Try Rug Doctor's Steam Cleaner. Whenever you get a stain it is always better to treat it immediately. Not doing so will cause the stain to be harder to remove and some stains may permanently stain your carpet if not treated immediately.

1) Crisper Cookies, Longer - Putting a small piece of store bought bread inside your cookie jar keeps the cookies crispy and makes them last longer.

2) Storing Brown Sugar - The best way to store brown sugar is to seal it up when you are finished and store it in the refrigerator. Also, storing spices like Cajun and Paprika in the refrigerator will extend their shelf life as well.

3) Plastic Containers Stained - To keep your plastic containers from getting stained from tomato based foods, rub the inside of the container with a little vegetable oil or non-stick cooking spray before placing food in them. This provides a "protective coating" for your container.

4) Keeping Potatoes from Sprouting - When you purchase a bag of potatoes put an apple in the bag. The potatoes will last without sprouting or wrinkling for about eight (8) weeks.

5) Removing Stubborn Tea and Coffee Stains - To get stubborn tea and coffee stains out of your cups, add a half-teaspoon of salt and a little water before scrubbing with a sponge.

6) An Easy Way to Remove Burnt on Foods From Skillets - Simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Bring to a boil on the stove. Your skillet will be much easier to clean now.

7) Grate the Cheese, please - Before you begin grating cheese, spray some cooking oil onto your grater. Not only will the cheese grate easier; it makes clean up a snap!

8) Picture Ice - Don't throw away the film canisters that your standard 35mm film comes in. And, don't give it to the film guys, keep it for this handy tip. First wash the film containers thoroughly. Then, fill the film canisters with water, put the tops on and freeze. They make great icecubs for your cooler. They won 't drip and they won't make a watery mess either! Plus, they are reusable!

9) Stuck On Microwaved Mess - When food gets "baked" onto the inside of your microwave surfaces, it can be a hassle to clean up. Try this tip the next time you clean yours. Boil a cup of water inside your microwave. Let the cup of boiling water sit in the microwave and steam for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Then, carefully remove the cup. Be careful not to burn yourself. Now, you will see that the steam from the boiling water has softened the "baked" on food and makes wiping it clean a snap!

10) Don't Throw Away Those Breadties! - Hang onto the ties that keep your bread fresh. They are an excellent tool! You can use them to close opened bags of frozen vegetables, fruit and even sugar. Try one out as a ponytail holder in a fix. And, they even work to secure a fallen off button in a jam. Be creative and you too can find many more uses for breadties.

11) Sour Milk? Time to Clean the Copper - Sour milk is an excellent way to clean your copper. Pour the milk into a flat dish and soak the copper for about an hour and then wash in soap and water. You'll be amazed!

12) No More Ice Cream Cone Mess - The next time you’re at home and you want to make yourself or a loved one an ice cream cone grab the miniature marshmallows first. Stuff one marshmallow into the bottom of the cone and keep that ice cream from dripping out of the bottom!


Laundry Tips

1) No More Missing Socks - Are you tired of sorting socks? Try this handy tip. Give each member of your family a mesh zippered laundry bag. These are usually used for pantyhose and such. Have each member put their socks in their own bag. After the laundry is done just pass out the bags! This also helps with that "missing sock syndrome" that most washer and dryers experience.

2) Make Your Old Jeans Look Like New - Old jeans? New jeans! Try putting a pair of old faded jeans into the washer with a new pair of jeans (same color jeans must be used for this to work). The dye from the new jeans should transfer to the old ones giving your old faded jeans a renewed look.

3) Polish, Not Just for Fingernails - Tired of buttons falling off your shirts and pants? Try this neat trick! Apply clear fingernail polish to the center of each button over the thread. This will act as an invisible sealer to keep those buttons where they belong.

4) Keeping Your Laundry Fresh - Place a fabric softener sheet in dresser drawers and your clothes will smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels and linens.




General Household Tips

1) Fresher Ashtrays - Freshen ashtrays by placing 1/2 inches of baking soda in the bottom of the ashtrays to eliminate stale tobacco odors. Replace the baking sods when you empty the ashtray. As an added bonus, the baking soda helps extinguish cigarettes and cigars.

2) Dusting - When dusting televisions, computer monitors, and other electronic devices, use a new dryer sheet to pick up the dust.

3) Easy Ways to Remove Scuffmarks - For black scuff marks on linoleum two things work; the bottom of your tennis shoes, just press and rub. Also, use a flat GREEN scrub pad. They get the mark but not the finish.

Very helpful in the bathroom and bedroom where you wouldn’t normally store extras!

9) Craft a Place Mat - Here is a fun idea for this holiday season. Make some handmade place mats for your table in three simple steps.You will need; construction paper, clear contact paper, glue, and some flat objects to glue onto your construction paper. You can use hand drawn pictures, photographs, leaves, and cards, or choose your own objects! First, take your flat objects and glue them onto your construction paper.Next, roll the clear contact paper over the construction paper. Make sure that you let the contact paper run off of your construction paper and cover both sides of the construction paper with the contact paper. Then, trim the excess contact paper from around the edges of your construction paper.Viola! You just made a personalized place mat.Try using this idea as homemade gifts, or even as place settings for holiday dinners!

10) The Case of the Nail Hole Cover-up - Do you have unsightly nail holes in your walls? Try this quick, inexpensive fixer up! Apply white toothpaste into the hole and then smooth the paste flat with a damp sponge. Upon drying, your nail holes will be history.

11) Homemade Frost For Your Windows - What you will need; Epson salt, Beer, paintbrush, and a plastic furniture cover. First, cover any furniture near the window so that your frosting doesn't get on anything but the window. Next, make your frost window covering in a bowl by mixing one-tablespoon Epson salt to one cup of beer.Then, with your paintbrush brush onto the window. This creates a very neat frosted effect and washes off with an ammonia based window cleaner. You can also use this method for privacy on windows in a bathroom or any room of your house.

12) Never Lose Another Sewing Needle - If you sew you know what "looking for a needle in a haystack'' really means. Try this tip to minimize the time you spend looking for a sewing needle. Take a small magnet and drop it into your sewing basket or drawer or wherever you keep your sewing supplies. The magnet will attract the needles and you won't ever have to look for a sewing needle again!

13) Miniblind Cleaning Madness - Do you find that cleaning your miniblinds is difficult? Here is an easy way to clean your miniblinds with sparkling results. First, take down your blinds. Next, lay the blinds down flat either outside or in a bathtub. Then get a garden hose if you are outside, or your showerhead will do if you are using the tub and give them a good spray down, make sure to get both sides. Now you are ready to soap them down. Take a bucket of soapy water and a scrub brush and give both sides of the blinds a good once over scrub down. Then, rinse the soap off of both sides of the blind. Pick up your blinds and give them a good shake. Finally, hang them up to dry. When dry hang back up in your window!

14) Be An Efficient Errand Runner - Plan ahead when running errands. Make a list of all the places you need to go and then start with the one farthest away from your house. This way, you won’t crisscross paths and if you don’t get everything done, then the errands you missed will be the ones closest to your house and therefore easier to get to the next day! This also will save you on gasoline.

15) To Paint The Wall Or Not To Paint The Wall – that is the question - So you decided to spruce up your bathroom with a new vibrant shade but which one will you be able to live with? Most paint stores recommend painting just one wall and then deciding on a color, but who wants to paint each wall a different color and who wants to paint the whole wall unless it’s going to stay there? Here is a simple solution, one that you can live with. Pick out a few shades of colors and buy only a pint of each. Then, go to your local supermarket and pick up some white posterboard (about .29-.69 each). Now, paint each posterboard with a shade and tape it up to your wall. Now, you can decide what color you want without the hassle of painting an entire wall.


Bathroom Tips

1) Prevent Shower Buildup - Wax off, wax on! After that Saturday scrub down of the shower and tub try putting liquid car wax on the shower tiles. Polish just like you would a car when it dries. The wax should prevent build up of mildew, dirt deposits and grime for up to six months. You need only rinse and squeegee the shower to keep it sparkling clean!
